Talking walls

Gramps sent me an e-mail:
April,

Just a quick dispatch from your Gramps. Iris took me into the elevator recently, as she is wont to do. The elevator was quite full, and as soon as the door closed, the "oldies" in the elevator shared the most scandalous gossip! Iris forbids me from sharing the details, but I can tell you that I found myself thinking, "If only the walls could talk!" Wait, maybe the reason I was thinking that was because everyone seemed to be ignoring me, down at wheelchair level, while they swapped their gossip. And if the walls could talk, at least then, someone would have been talking to me!

Oh, my, there goes the old fert, getting himself depressed. April, I know you're busy with the vet clinic and Liz's wedding plans, but can you spare some time today to visit your old Gramps?

Grandpa Jim
So I wrote back and sed I wd def. make time 2 visit. I'll get Dixie out from where Mom has her tied up and also bring my guitar, of course!

It amazes me that your family finds the time to put on a great big show to celebrate triumphing over an inconvenient woman and they can't be bothered to brighten Jim's day. Instead, they ignore him so they can plot an atrocity in his name. You're realted to a lot of sick people.

Every little visit counts, even if it's only for a few minutes. You better spend as much time you have with him now, because when he's gone, you'll end up wishing you had spent more time with him. You'll end up wishing you'd been able to play one more song on your guitar with him. Taken him for one more walk/stroll with Dixie with him.

Right now time is the most precious gift you can give him. You have plenty of it, while he doesn't have much. Your parents and your sister have time too. One thing that would help Lizilla calm down during this mad rush would be to step back, take a couple hours off, and go visit your Grandpa Jim and Iris. Maybe even eat lunch with them, either there at their home, or take them to a cheap but nice restaurant (get them out of the house for a couple of hours).

I used to spend a lot of time with my great-granddad after he went to the personal care home. My parents hardly ever opted to go visit him, unless it was to take something to him, although in that case they usually sent me there, since I worked nearby. My grandma only visited him on his birthday and on the holidays. She felt that was enough of a visit. At least until he caught pneumonia and ended up in the hospital and later nursing home. Then we were there every night. She was trying to make up for lost time spent, but it wasn't enough.

I am busy planning a major social event (my wedding)! I don't have time to sit with Grandpa Jack while Irene tells me what she thinks he's thinking about! Besides, seeing them puts me in a gloomy mood.
